A cookie banner that actually respects "no"
Most cookie banners ask a question and then ignore the answer. We found that two of our own sites did too. Here is what we changed, and the standard every Zyntel product now follows.
Most cookie banners ask a question and then ignore the answer. Click "No" and the analytics load anyway; the banner just remembers that you were asked. In September we found that pattern in KantaHub, and this month we found it on zyntel.net. Both had banners that stored the visitor's choice while analytics started on every page load regardless.
What we changed
- Nothing runs until you say yes. Analytics (we use PostHog) only start after "That's fine". "No thanks" turns tracking off and clears its cookies.
- One small card, not a wall. A short question in the corner — "A quick question about cookies" — with two buttons the same size, so saying no is as easy as saying yes.
- Plain words. The sites use a few cookies they need to work, and those are always on. We ask separately about counting which pages get visited.
- You can change your mind. The choice can be reopened from Settings in our apps and from "Cookie settings" in the zyntel.net footer.
- No analytics, no banner. Docs and builds that don't run analytics don't show a card at all. There's nothing to ask.
One standard for every product
We wrote this down as a company standard, so every Zyntel product, and every client site we build, uses the same card and the same rule. KantaHub was first, zyntel.net followed this week, and the rest are being brought in line.
It's a small thing to get right. But if a product can't be trusted with a "no" on its cookie banner, it's fair to wonder what else it ignores.
